This special inlay banding box was custom made for a
customer who thought the combination of ebony, quilted maple, and
maple burl could be truly spectacular. He was right, and so we made
a few (three) extra while we were at it. Internet venders have a tendency
to exaggerate the quality of their products, with the words "museum
quality" being thrown around a bit loosely, but in this piece
the quality of construction we put into everything we make is combined
with precious and lovely woods to make a box that truly is museum
quality, --but built for practical daily use.
The decorative banding in this top is made of maple
burl surrounded by fine wenge lines. We build the banding from solid
lumber, carefully assembling it piece by piece, and then slicing the
resulting block into 1/16" thick bandings, about three times
the thickness of 99 % of today's commercial veneer. (For some photos
and explanation of that process, click
here). The center medallion is cut from the same plank, and is
also cut thick, allowing us to sand to perfection, and creating a
top rugged enough to withstand the generations of use it will receive
as a treasured heirloom. The quilted maple veneered panels in the
front, sides and back are framed in jet black ebony, with mortise
and tenon joinery, as in the finest furniture, used in the stretcher
to leg joints.
Open shot showing necklace and earring provisions. Necklaces hang
from 11 solid brass hooks and are held in place by padded spring
closed hinged upper tab, which puts a slight tension on the chains,
preventing sagging and entanglement. This opens and closes with
the flick of a finger. Earrings are hung from slots in tray, and
those best hung from holes from a row in front at bottom, altogether
holding about 22 pairs of earrings.
The drawer fronts are delicately dovetailed into the maple drawer
sides - a beautiful detail when the drawers are opened. The drawer
is deep enough to house a very large ring. They are precision fitted
on wooden glides, and are equipped with spring loaded stops that
prevent accidental removal of the drawer, but allow its removal
with a swift tug. All drawer and tray dividers are glued or fit
into routed slots, so they won't end up becoming loose annoyances.
The drawer pulls are sculpted from ebony, tapered to the rear for
a positive grip, and polished to a sensuous shine. The box is finished
with several coats of handrubbed tung oil and varnish, a finish
that will develop a beautiful patina from years of handling, and
can be easily touched up by the owner if it is accidentally damaged
or scuffed. Buy
